Domain 1: Systems

The Systems Domain of the MCM ITP (Domain 1) assesses a broad range of technologies which are fundamental to the overall development and integration of future missile systems.  The domain aims to develop innovative techniques that complement the emergent technologies developed across the programme and that enhance the capability of missile system solutions to meet future operational requirements.

The most promising emergent techniques are investigated under three main themes:

  • System concepts and architectures: Whilst emergent technology is normally seen at subsystem and component levels, from time to time a whole new weapon concept emerges – in response to a new threat, as a new application of development made for other purposes, or simply as a result of a bright idea. The term “concept” may refer to weapon hardware configuration, weapon architecture, or system architectures and/or Concept of Operation (CONOPS) involving a weapon in a novel way. It may often be an exploitation of emergent technology. New concepts have to either increase effectiveness and reliability and / or reduce through-life cost, manpower needs or deployed logistics costs. The ITP provides a unique opportunity for ‘pump priming’ such ideas.
  • Guided weapons techniques:  The overall objective is to improve missile performance in terms of range, manoeuvrability, precision, survivability and ability to intercept more and more demanding targets.
  • Processes, modelling and tools: One of the most efficient ways to reduce development cost and time is to identify and develop innovative simulation tools that enable weapon systems designers to demonstrate and validate the weapon system or weapon sub-system components through simulations.  These simulations can also include models of the external environment to allow assessment of sub-system performance.
