Domain 7: Fuzes and Safety & Arming Units (SAUs)

The Fuzes and SAUs Domain of the MCM ITP (Domain 7) covers all “Fuzing Systems” technologies. These comprise the Target Detection Device technologies required to sense targets, Safety technologies to ensure that weapons are safe for transport and carriage, but effective when deployed, and the Initiation technologies required to transform electrical signals into explosive outputs to initiate warheads.

Topics in this Domain can be described as falling in one of three categories:

  • Detect: “Detection” research work in the Domain focuses on the detection, location and discrimination technologies associated with non contact, “Proximity” devices.
  • Decide: The algorithms and programs used in proximity sensors comprise one clear example of the “decision” aspect of the Domain’s technical coverage.
  • Detonate: technologies needed to convert electrical signals to explosive effects.

In order to elicit novel and innovative research proposals, the Domain has undertaken a number of workshops oriented at attracting Fuzing specialists. These workshops have provided an opportunity to discuss fuzing needs and requirements in a collaborative environment and have led to a number of research teamings and proposals.

The leadership of this domain is the responsibility of Thales, to register your interest and receive further information on the opportunities to propose research within this domain:
